We are a central school in Kaštel Stari with approx. 700 learners, all of which come from the Municipality of Kaštela. Our branch school in the nearby rural area of Prgomet is attended by 11 learners, showing a reduction by 5 students since last year. The classes in the branch school are combined. Besides regular curriculum, the school offers elective classes of IT, German language, Catholic and Islam Religion. Around 70 teachers are employed and we have a Professional Development Service with 4 staff: a pedagogue, a psychologist, a speech therapist and a librarian. There are 10 Education Assistants. Our non teaching staff include a gardener as the school is in possession of an olive garden of some 15,000 m2.
We are an ECO School, part of the the largest global sustainable schools program. Our activities in this field range from collection of paper for recycling in which we have collected tons and therefore enjoy golden status in the network, to promotion of environment friendly practices through our daily activities integrated in the school curriculum. We firmly stand behind the belief that it starts in the classroom and expands to the community by engaging the next generation in action based learning. Three R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) are the core of our daily activities. The school has a garden (500 m2) and an olive grove (15,000 m2). Their products of our Student Cooperative are recognised at national level (various souvenirs, soaps, bath salts and balms). The quality of the olive oil we produce is widely recognised. One of the main features of our efforts is the humanitarian aspect of our activities, to mention only a few: Mary's Meals, For the Children of Kistanje, Aid for the Affected in Natural Disasters etc. The school has also conducted successful projects by the Center of Excellence of our county, aiming to promote and preserve our cultural heritage. Placed in the cradle of Croatian history makes our school adequate for learning through Young Archaeologists Group and different projects dealing with preservation of our cultural heritage and passing it to new generations with emphasis on traditional dances, music and singing. We have been promoting healthy lifestyles trough sports competitions, excelled in judo, volleyball, handball and dancing, and various project activities such as Apple Day, Let’s Cycle, Picking Olives, UNICEF Milky Way Day. Professional Development Service has been promoting child wellbeing through school wide initiatives such as Mostly Clear and the School of Emotions projects in cooperation with the Croatian Institute for Public Health, aiming at the protection of mental health. This resulted in, among other things, two murals on our school building drawn by the students of the School of Design and Graphics. Our learners have participated in a number of workshops on the creation of sustainable products made of recycled materials and exhibited them on Christmas and other festive days. The proceeds of the sales have been used for humanitarian aid purposes. As we tend towards better inclusiveness school widely participated in Pink Shirt Day, Odd Sock Day and UNICEF anti-bullying program and campaigns. We are trying to ensure better adoption of communication and critical thinking skills through national actions like Let's Read Aloud, Reading Empowerment Quiz and debate. Our Debate Club successfully participates in national competitions. We have had experience with student exchanges with the twin city of Kaštela, Lindlar, Germany. We are an eTwinning School participating in national and international projects. We have no Erasmus experience.
